Originally built as a tower house in the 16th century by the Murrays of Blackbarony, a Baronetage that still exists to this day, Barony Castle’s facade was extended in the 18th and 19th centuries, giving it a grand exterior that is now enjoyed by its guests.
Currently operated as a resplendent hotel, standing in around 25 acres of lush green garden and weald, Barony Castle also has the kind of modern facilities one would expect from 21st century lodgings, all nestled within the historical stone walls.
This combination of history and contemporary mod-cons, has allowed Barony Castle to become one of the area’s most sought after venues, whether it be for a simple exercise in weekend relaxation or an important business conference. The castle has also developed a reputation as a refined and romantic backdrop for a wedding, holding a license for the registration of marriages and providing a dedicated planner to ensure that the special day is just that.
The building houses 78 well-sized, en-suite rooms, all with free wi-fi access, and guests can also enjoy the pleasures of an indoor pool, gym, spa and sauna, as well as the more vigorous joys of the five-a-side football pitch and rope course.
Being less than 20 miles from Edinburgh city centre, and also featuring a classically styled restaurant, not only makes this an ideal getaway for denizens of Auld Reekie, but also an idyllic base for locals and tourists alike to explore the wonders of the Borders and its capital.

Excellent service from start of visit to leaving. Greeted with a warm, friendly smile and offered Whisky, Sherry or Fruit Juice upon arrival after 200 miles of driving. Instantly felt at home in cozy, warm, clean and friendly environment. It was great to see staff who knew and enjoyed their profession, where nothing was too much trouble, and everything was done with panache and a genuine smile-a rarity in this day and age! The room was large, clean, warm and contained everything you would expect, from phone to fresh fruit, from tea and coffee facilities to ironing board and iron, from Jacuzzi Bath to large Sofa/Bed. Free use of Mountain Bikes to peruse the grounds and free coffees and biscuits. All this added up to an exceptionally pleasant weekend with lasting memories.

The hotel is set in a beautiful location, with extensive gardens, a stream and small waterfalls. On arrival we received a whiskey or sherry, which was a nice touch. We were given a short hotel tour then shown to our adapted/disabled room which was very comfortable and well suited to our needs. We made full use of the leisure facilities provided a small fitness studio, sauna, lovely warm swimming pool with jacuzzi. The weather was rather wet and miserable so we decided to take our evening meals in the hotel on both nights and were glad we did, as they were excellent, as were the cheery and attentive dining staff...I give special praise to all of the hotel staff who made our stay so enjoyable. We would not hesitate to return in the future.
